Beyond Fear: Finding Resilience with Tarot and Buddhist Psychology
Fear Doesn't Have to Win: Cultivating Courage & Knowing Thyself
Moving Towards Fearlessness: Using Wisdom from Tarot and Buddhist Psychology
Fear. It’s in the bones, a primal knowing. We all carry it. But what if, instead of letting it define us, we acknowledged it as a part of the greater tapestry, a thread in the intricate weaving of human existence, and found the courage to move forward, grounded in the present moment, rooted in the earth below and the stars above?
Knowing Thyself Through Tarot:
The Tarot, with its rich symbolism and poetic narration of the human condition, offers a powerful lens for self-discovery. Each card tells a story, reflecting the energies and karmic imprints at play within us. When we face a challenging card like the Tower or the Ten of Swords, it can feel like a daunting obstacle. Yet, these cards can also be catalysts for growth, urging us to break free from old patterns and embrace change. The Tarot illuminates our stories and karma, and when interpreted with compassion and kindness, can liberate us from them, creating spaciousness and loosening unwholesome identifications. When we work with the Tarot, we delve into the beauty of these universal archetypes and artfully charm ourselves back to the present moment. How can these symbols of the human condition illuminate the most wholesome path for self-realization?
"Know thyself" is a historical term from ancient Greece, inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, an ancient site associated with oracular prophesying.
So, with our Tarot lens in place, let's see how Buddhist psychology can help us navigate fear.
How Can Buddhist Psychology Open Us to Fear With More Courage?
Buddhism teaches us that fear and stress are a natural part of the human experience. They arise from our attachment to the illusion of a separate self, a fixed identity that we desperately try to protect. Again, this is totally normal; the more intimate we are with understanding this, the more we can see how fear arises ("I can't do this" or "I am not capable of..."—you name it). As we practice meditation, those identities loosen their grip on us. Mindfulness meditation, bringing bare awareness to what is happening right now, loosens our grip on having our lives and identities be so fixed. Through the process of meditating we begin to understand the impermanent nature of reality, we realize that everything is in constant flux, and thus we begin to loosen the grip of fear.
How Can We Cultivate More Courage in the Face of Fear?
So, how do we cultivate fearlessness? Here are a few insights from Tarot and Buddhist philosophy to spark inspiration:
Embrace the Present Moment: The present moment is the only reality we truly have. When we focus on the now, we can quiet the anxious chatter of the mind and find clarity in the face of uncertainty. Savor your dinner, coffee, or sunset. in a culture that is moving rapidly, consciously move slowly and do one thing at a time.
Acceptance and Non-Judgment: The Tarot reminds us that every experience, even the difficult ones, holds a lesson. Buddhism teaches us to observe our thoughts and emotions without judgment, allowing them to arise and pass without clinging.
Compassion for Self and All Beings: Fear often stems from self-criticism and doubt. Cultivating compassion for ourselves, recognizing our inherent worthiness, is essential for building courage.
Find Your Center: Just as the Fool in the Tarot takes a leap of faith, trusting in the unknown, we too can find our inner strength through practices like meditation and mindfulness.

Instead of Letting Go, Can You Let Things Just…Be?
Fearlessness is not about the absence of fear. It's about acknowledging fear, understanding its causes, and choosing to move forward with courage and compassion. Both Tarot and Buddhism offer tools to navigate this journey of self-discovery, helping us to embrace the unknown and live with greater ease, clarity, and strength—so necessary in times like these.
Fear has definitely been showing up in my life lately. A few examples:
Starting the new year with several illnesses landed me in and ambulance with a trip to the ER which brought up some serious fears—fear of death, and then, let's be real, fear of those soaring medical costs.
Losing a financial stream when my ad manager suddenly disappeared was unsettling. I worried about them, of course, but also about how I'd replace that income.
And, like so many of us, I'm deeply concerned about the challenges facing my queer and trans loved ones.
The list could go on... What about you? What are some of the fears that have been present in your life?
